Tussen Wal en Schip – Geruisloos Indisch

Our Francesca Vincentie has made music for a new documentary, called ‘Tussen Wal en Schip – Geruisloos Indisch‘.

It is a documentary about three grandchildren who, together with their Indo grandparents, face the hidden colonial past. In candid conversations, they investigate the legacy of migration, silence and colonization.

This new film, by the makers of Indisch Zwijgen, will premiere nationwide in cinemas throughout the Netherlands in June 2025.

The Indonesian Dialogues

In the project The Indonesian Dialogues, diverse artists from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Indonesia have united. From a shared family history, the collective examines the complexity of a postcolonial past. The findings come together in an installation performance. The common thread is a series of filmed dialogues, recorded during a trip through Indonesia. This form raises the necessary questions and in this way this project also questions itself.

Francesca Vincentie was one of the artists and has created beautiful touching music about the complexity of decolonization.

Democracy Fellowship Humanity in Action

For 2024-2025, Sacha Celine Verheij was a Democracy Fellow at Humanity in Action. The central theme of the fellowship was Democracy and the Politics of Memory.

The way we remember and construct our past informs our identity, decision-making, and perspective. It shapes who we are, how we interpret where we come from, and the values that define us.

But history has never been apolitical, and recently, it’s been increasingly weaponized. In some countries, memory is not a closed chapter.

Sacha Celine Verheij’s work cover post-colonial questions, deal with the politics of memory, shed light on the remnants of colonialism in present-day and add underexposed narratives to the canon. She dives into her mother’s family history, by interviewing relatives about their Surinamese and Moluccan roots.
